On May 10, 1973 a historic meeting took place between His Holiness Pope Shenouda III of Blessed memory and Pope Paul VI in Rome

, in which they signed a joint declaration. Forty years later, on May 10, 2013 their successors His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and Pope Francis met for the first time at the Vatican and declared May 10 the “Day of Friendship” between the Coptic Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. Each year since the two apostolic successors exchange letters of fraternal embrace, hope and friendship. On May 9, 2018 HG Bishop Abraham and HG Bishop Kyrillos conveyed the apostolic greetings of HH Pope Tawadros II to Pope Francis during his weekly general meeting at the Vatican, who in turn expressed his love towards Pope Tawadros and the Coptic Orthodox Church.
